18.

Caden sat at the laden picnic table for a full thirty minutes after Rose and Olly left.

It took him that long to absorb the implications of their conversation. A long half hour where he mentally replayed every word, every revelation.

She’d told him about Olly’s father.

He’d almost told her too much.

Last night had been incredible, the type of night he’d fantasized about ever since she’d returned to Redemption and they’d renewed their friendship. But it only served to make his life harder. Because now he knew he wanted her more than ever.

She wanted to take things slow. He didn’t.

So where to from here?

He’d stopped himself from blurting the truth just in time: that he’d walk away from his mayoral campaign if it meant settling down with her in a real relationship. In fact, he’d do just about anything if it meant having Rose in his life permanently. To wake up next to. To have family brunches with. To help raise her kid.

That’s how he knew this was serious, when he started envisaging raising Olly. It was a huge undertaking, being a dad to a child who wasn’t biologically his, a responsibility he wouldn’t take lightly.

He even looked forward to the kid bounding up to his door every morning, a huge grin on his face and ten new questions to bombard him with. For a kid his age, Olly asked a lot of questions. A never-ending stream that exasperated him at times but generally made Caden stare at him in wonder.

Yeah, he could definitely see them being a family. But first, he had to do some investigating to ensure Rose’s past wasn’t holding her back from a future.

She’d said she wasn’t hung up on Olly’s father, but it would explain her reticence at moving forward. Hell, it would explain a lot more. Like what put the haunted look in her eyes, even now, when she’d dealt with her demons at rehab.

Feeling like an idiot but willing to do whatever it took to win his woman, he cleared the table in record time before heading to the den and firing up his computer.

He typed DYSON PATRICE, CELEBRITY CHEF into the search engine and waited.

It didn’t take long for hundreds of hits to pop up before his eyes. The first two pages featured articles about his infamous death.

Caden clicked on the first link and did a rudimentary scan. He wasn’t impressed. The guy sounded like a Class A jerk: partying his way through New York, threesomes with supermodels, copious drugs. But as he scrolled through more pages and more articles, he understood why a young, impressionable Rose would’ve been attracted to the guy.

He looked like the epitome of a movie star bad boy: slicked-back dark hair, dark eyes, a brooding glower, a slight curl to his upper lip. Dyson had a James Dean edge and Caden knew girls went wild for rebels.

Which was probably why Rose had first hooked up with him: associating with a kindred spirit. She’d told him she’d left home at
